You have a Jio, Airtel or Vi connection, your area apparently has 5G, yet your status bar still shows 4G. Usually the cause is one of four things: the phone, the network setting, the recharge plan, or simply coverage. This guide shows you how to confirm whether your phone supports Indian 5G, how to switch it on for Android and iPhone, and what to check when the 5G icon still refuses to appear.

Step 1: Confirm your phone is actually a 5G phone

A 4G-only phone cannot connect to 5G, whatever the settings or plan. 5G needs a compatible modem inside the phone, and no software update can add one. There are three quick ways to check.

Look at the network options in Settings

If your phone's network-type menu (covered in Step 2) lists any option with "5G" in it, the hardware supports 5G. If the best option is "4G/LTE", it does not.

Use your operator's app

The MyJio, Airtel Thanks and Vi apps can each tell you whether your handset and your location are ready for their 5G network.

Check the manufacturer's spec page for 5G bands

"5G" on the box is not always the full story. Some budget phones support only a handful of 5G bands, so it is worth checking the exact band list. Open the official product page (Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, Apple and so on), find the full specifications or "Network" section, and look for the 5G NR band list. Entries are written as n28, n78 and so on.

Which 5G bands do Jio, Airtel and Vi use?

All three operators bought 5G spectrum in the 2022 auction. Here is what each holds for 5G and how it runs its network:

OperatorMain 5G bandsNetwork type
Jion78 (3.3 GHz band), n28 (700 MHz), n258 (26 GHz)Standalone (SA)
Airteln78 (3.3 GHz band), n258 (26 GHz), plus 5G on re-farmed 1800/2100/2300 MHz in many areasMainly Non-Standalone (NSA), with standalone pilots
Vin78 (3.3 GHz), n258 (26 GHz)Not officially stated

What this means for you: n78 is the band almost every Indian 5G network depends on, and nearly all 5G phones sold in India support it. If your phone lacks n78, it will struggle on every network. For Jio, also check n28, because the 700 MHz band reaches further and works better indoors. The 26 GHz (n258) mmWave band is used only in limited spots and is missing from most phones, so do not worry if your phone does not list it.

SA vs NSA in plain words: Jio runs a standalone 5G network, so the phone needs 5G SA support. Most 5G phones from the last few years have it, but some early 5G models only got SA through a later software update. Airtel's NSA 5G uses the 4G network to manage the connection, so it works on a wider range of older 5G phones.

Step 2: Turn on 5G in your phone's settings

Many phones ship with 4G set as the preferred network, even when the hardware supports 5G. Menu names change between brands and software versions, so treat these as guides rather than exact paths.

Android (general)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to the mobile network section. Depending on the brand, it may be called Network & internet, Connections, SIM & network or Mobile network.
  3. If you use two SIMs, tap the Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM you want to use for 5G.
  4. Open Preferred network type (sometimes just Network mode).
  5. Choose the option that includes 5G, such as "5G (recommended)", "5G/4G/3G/2G (auto)" or "5G preferred".
  6. Restart the phone if the 5G icon does not appear within a minute or two.

On Samsung Galaxy phones, the path is usually Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. On a dual-SIM phone, some models can only use 5G on one SIM at a time. If so, make the 5G SIM your mobile data SIM.

iPhone

5G works on iPhone 12 and later models. On older iPhones, the 5G option does not appear.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Mobile Data (called Cellular on some iPhones), then Mobile Data Options. On a dual-SIM iPhone, pick the line first.
  3. Tap Voice & Data.
  4. Select 5G Auto or 5G On.

5G Auto uses 5G only when it makes a real difference and switches to LTE otherwise to save battery. 5G On stays on 5G whenever it is available, which can drain the battery faster. If you only see LTE, update iOS (Settings > General > Software Update) and check that your operator supports 5G on your iPhone.

Do you need a new SIM?

No. Jio, Airtel and Vi all say their existing 4G SIMs work on 5G. The only exception is a very old or damaged SIM. If nothing else works, ask your operator whether a free replacement would help.

Plan requirements for 5G

Having a 5G phone and 5G coverage is not always enough. The plan you recharge with decides whether you get unlimited 5G data. Plans change often, so treat these as a snapshot and check the operator's app before recharging.

  • Jio: Since July 2024, unlimited 5G data comes only with plans that give 2GB or more data per day. Plans with 1.5GB per day or less no longer include it.
  • Airtel: Unlimited 5G is available on selected prepaid and postpaid plans. Reports from mid-2026 list it with some 1.5GB-per-day prepaid plans, such as ₹349. Airtel's terms treat use above 300GB in 30 days as commercial use, so heavy users can be restricted.
  • Vi: Unlimited 5G starts with Vi's entry unlimited plans. As of early 2026, that was ₹349 in several circles and ₹299 in others. Use above 300GB in 28 days counts as commercial use.

On a plan without unlimited 5G, your phone may still connect to 5G, but the data counts against your normal daily allowance.

Vi 5G in 2026: where it stands

Vi launched 5G later than its rivals, starting in Mumbai in March 2025. Coverage has since grown steadily, and by July 2026 Vi said 5G was live in 225 towns and cities. That is still much smaller than Jio's or Airtel's coverage, so open the Vi app to check whether your area is covered before you assume your phone or settings are at fault.

Step 3: Keep the phone updated

Phone makers often enable or improve 5G (including SA support for Jio) through software updates. On Android, go to Settings > System > Software update or Settings > Software update, depending on the brand. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Also install any "carrier settings update" prompt that appears on iPhone.

Troubleshooting: 5G still not showing

  1. Confirm coverage. Check the MyJio, Airtel Thanks or Vi app for 5G at your location. 5G may work outdoors but drop indoors, especially on higher bands.
  2. Recheck the network mode. Some updates or SIM swaps reset it to 4G.
  3. Check the dual-SIM setup. Make the 5G-capable SIM your mobile data SIM, and remember that some phones support 5G on only one slot.
  4. Toggle Aeroplane mode on for ten seconds, then off, or restart the phone.
  5. Check the plan. Make sure your recharge is active and that it includes 5G.
  6. Update the software as described above.
  7. Turn off battery saver. On some phones, power-saving modes limit 5G.
  8. Reset network settings as a last step. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, so note them first.
  9. Contact your operator if none of this works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a software update turn my 4G phone into a 5G phone?
No. 5G needs a 5G modem in the hardware. Updates can only enable or improve 5G on phones that already have one.

My phone shows 5G on Airtel but not on Jio. Why?
Jio runs standalone 5G, which some older 5G phones did not support until an update. Your phone may also lack the n28 band. Install the latest update and check the phone's band list and SA support.

Does 5G use more battery?
It can, especially in weak-signal areas. On iPhone, choose 5G Auto. On Android, switch back to 4G if you are in an area without 5G coverage.

Is unlimited 5G really unlimited?
Reports say Jio does not apply a fixed monthly cap on eligible plans. Airtel and Vi apply a 300GB fair-use threshold per 30 days and 28 days respectively, so very heavy use can be restricted.
